Things to Know Before Your Humantay Lake tour
Health & Safety Considerations
The hike to Humantay Lake can be demanding, especially due to the high altitude. For this reason, it is not recommended for travelers with heart conditions or serious medical issues. Pregnant travelers should also avoid this activity for their own safety.
Weather Conditions
Our Humantay Lake tours operate in all weather, from clear sunny mornings to sudden cold winds or rain. Please dress for a variety of conditions.
Age Restrictions
The minimum age to participate is 8 years old.
For travelers over 60, the hike may be challenging; we encourage evaluating your physical condition beforehand.
Physical Requirements
Hikers should be in moderate physical shape. The ascent is steep and the altitude can make breathing more difficult. The trail is not wheelchair accessible.
Cold Temperatures at High Altitude
Humantay Lake sits above 4,000 meters. Temperatures can drop to nearly freezing, especially early in the morning. Wear very warm clothing, bring coca leaves for altitude support, and carry only essential items to make your hike easier.
About Cheap Agencies in Cusco
Around Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, you’ll find many travel agencies offering extremely low prices. Be aware that these usually mean very large groups (25–35 people) with only one guide.
We offer a small-group experience, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 travelers for a more comfortable and personalized tour.
Our Recommendations for a Great Experience
Acclimatize First
Spend at least two full days in Cusco before attempting the hike. This helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness and ensures a more enjoyable experience.
Stay Hydrated
Bring at least 2 liters of water, plus an additional bottle to leave in the van. Hydration is crucial at high altitudes.
Rest the Night Before
We pick you up at 3:00 AM, so avoid alcohol, parties, or staying up late. Starting the day fresh makes a big difference on the trail.
If You Feel Sick, Descend
Altitude sickness is serious. If symptoms appear, descend immediately and notify your guide.
Important for Machu Picchu Travelers
If you visit Machu Picchu the day before your Humantay hike, make sure your travel agency books your return train early enough. You must be back in Cusco on time for the 3:00 AM pick up.
Simple Tips for Hiking to Humantay Lake
Go at a steady pace: The climb is steep and the altitude can affect breathing. Slow and steady is the safest approach.
Drink water often: Small sips throughout the hike help prevent headaches and fatigue.
Take breaks when needed: Listen to your body. Short rests will help you reach the lake comfortably.
How to Dress for Humantay Lake
